Epidemic

It’s contagious –
this feeling of apathy
or uncertainty, this feeling that
adult realities are going to steamroll
our childhood fantasies into pavement,
flatten our aspirations
into the mundane.

We have found a way out.
We have found a way to sidestep
the charging world,
to keep the magic of these years
alive for one more day.
All it takes is beer on the table
and an eye on the horizon of the future,

searching for wisdom
or nostalgia to appear.
Tonight, we are immune
to the human condition,

where people foam at the mouth
with talk of responsibilities
and higher callings.
